The collection of sculptures ranges from flora and fauna to masks and flying bunnies. Her work is reminiscent of a mythological view on themes such as evolution, birth, and emotion. She works with over-beaten abaca pulp that is pressed over forms and finally assembled. The Paper Forest explores the idea of reciprocal perception, a call and response between the viewer and the viewed, between seeing and being seen. Look gently and long at the natural world and it begins to return our gaze. As seen through the gallery windows, the piece reads as a diorama. The viewer is separated from the forest and its flora and fauna. Inside, you join a conversation, enter into dialogue, come to your own conclusions.
Location: Winooski Welcome Center

Kasini House is seeking artists to participate in a unique project centered in downtown Winooski. The Winooski Pop-Up Gallery District aims to create an instant gallery district using vacant spaces in downtown Winooski.

Artists interested in learning more about the Winooski Pop-up Gallery District should attend this information meeting.

Check out the CALL TO ARTISTS.

ABOUT THE EVENT

The Winooski Pop-up Gallery District transforms downtown Winooski into a vibrant hub of contemporary art for six weeks in June and July. The event includes art exhibitions; music and other cultural events; activities for children; and showcases the community of Winooski–its shops, restaurants, and history. The event will kick-off with a grand opening the weekend of June 22nd and continue through August 4th. The galleries will be open Thursday through Saturday from Noon to 6PM and Sundays from 10AM to 4PM. The Winooski Pop-up Gallery District is produced by Kasini House and the Winooski Welcome Center.

2012 vs 2011

This year’s Pop-Up Gallery District will operate differently from last year. Artists will not be required to staff galleries which, in 2012, will be staffed by volunteers. Artists are encouraged to volunteer, but it is not required. The Falls and Stoplight Galleries will exhibit large art, installation work, and curated exhibitions. Pop-up Pottery will become the Pop-up Artist Studios and become a working artist studio for artists who want to occupy the galleries and make art at the location. Artists may exhibit their work in the space as they see fit. What were the Top and Welcome Galleries have been combined and are now the Winooski Welcome Center & Gallery. Ric Kasini Kadour is curating “Hello from Vermont”, a diverse selection of art by contemporary Vermont artists, that will be exhibited in the space.

Kasini House is organizing a Vermont Small Press & Comic Fair that will take place at the Winooski Welcome Center & Gallery in Downtown Winooski on Saturday, March 24th, 2012, 11AM-7PM.

This first-ever annual Vermont Small Press & Comic Fair is a celebration of alternative publishing in Vermont. The fair is open to DIY ‘zine makers, illustrators, comic artists, book artists, graphic novelists, independent publishers of every type.

The fair is organized using the highly successful model of Montreal’s Expozine. Since 2002, Expozine has introduced thousands of people each year to alternative publishing. Their annual event, which takes place the last weekend of November in Montreal, helps “the public discover the multitude of local publications that fall outside the mainstream. It’s also become a place where the small press community and local writers and artists make new connections and plan future collaborations. The event attracts thousands of visitors eager to purchase material they might not find elsewhere.” In using this model, organizers of the Vermont Small Press & Comic Fair hope to create similar enthusiasm in Vermont’s creative community.

The 2012 event is co-hosted by Gregory C. Giordano aka Flameape. Giordano has been a staple of Vermont’s comic scene for over 20 years. Fresh out of high school, he worked at the first proper comic book store in the state, Earth Prime Comics on Bank Street in Burlington. Through this work, he played in integral role in putting Vermont on the radar of nationally-recognized artists, often bringing them to the state. In the early 2000’s, he published mini-comics featuring experimental, comic narratives and explored graphic-inspired video animation. He is a regular participant in the 24-hour Comics Challenge, where participants create 24-page comic books in 24 hours. He continues to work as an illustrator and a fine artist.

The Vermont Small Press & Comic Fair is an opportunity for the general public to meet artists and publishers and to take in the rich and diverse landscape of alternative publishing in and around Vermont. The public will be invited to peruse vendor or attend a talk or listen to a live reading. A complete roster of events will be released closer to the date.

Patty Sgrecci says about her work, “Animation has always fascinated me. Whether it’s a cartoon, claymation or a marionette dancing the jig, there is something magical about an inanimate object coming to life through movement. My mobiles are studies in form, balance and motion. The kinetic drama is accentuated by positive and negative space, light, gravity, and air.

“I love the process of making art, whether it’s carving wood or stitching hand-painted rice papers. I have developed a technique of combining layers of papers to strengthen them yet still maintain their translucency. Wire, acrylic and steel are some of the other elements that get incorporated into my mobiles. My goal is to find the balance point where line and form resolve in a lyrical moving sculpture.”

About Patty Sgrecci:
Patty Sgrecci grew up in New England, receiving a BFA in Fiber Arts from Syracuse University. It was after taking a summer workshop at Haystack Mountain School of Craft in Maine that she began to focus on kinetic sculptures. They integrate two earlier passions: marionettes and theater. The slowly moving sculptures create their own drama as they turn and spin. She uses an array of mixed media such as carved wood, reed, wire, steel and papier-mâché. Patty maintains a studio at The Granary in Brandon, Vermont In addition to showing in galleries and art fairs, she has also completed three large scale public art commissions in Washington and Idaho, where she once lived.

Patty is listed in Art Map Burlington’s Artist Database where her other work can be viewed online.

EXPOSED

Exposed is a long-standing annual outdoor sculpture exhibition in Stowe, Vermont. Hosted by Helen Day Art Center, Exposed was initiated by two local artists, Chris Curtis and John Matusz, to bring what was Vermont Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition off the lawn of Helen Day Art Center and into the village of Stowe to “expose” the artwork of both emerging and established artists to a greater public. Now in its 20th year, the exhibition aims to continue this tradition while introducing artists who work interactively with community and site. It will showcase sculptural objects and engage the public with a series of parallel events. This pervasive exhibition is grounded in a commitment to bring art to the public and the public to art. Exposed 2011 is co-presented by Stephen Levin and Helen Day Art Center. www.helenday.com/exposed

Outcast

For Michael Lew-Smith, art is very simple: Art is about Beauty.

Although Michael’s photographs are abstract, they are taken out of a concrete context, namely, the weathered paint that one finds on old, abandoned, misused and forgotten cars, trucks and tractors. In the process of taking these photographs, Michael became fascinated by the intricate designs and textures created by the weathering of paint and by the “inadvertent art” that can be extracted from forgotten junk.

Although these are digital photographs, Michael has “an inexplicable and unjustifiable adherence to portraying reality in the more traditional photographic sense.” Which is to say, he manipulates the images very little in the digital darkroom and that these images are largely accurate representations of the scenes encountered. Michael prints his photographs using an ink-jet process with archival ink and paper.

About Michael Lew-Smith
Michael Lew-Smith is a self-taught photographer and professional human who resides in Hardwick. He has also shown his work at the White Water Gallery in East Hardwick and at the Vermont Photo Space Gallery in Essex Junction.

Michael is listed in Art Map Burlington’s Artist Database where her other work can be viewed online.

The exhibition is on view April through June 2011 at Opportunities Credit Union, 92 North Avenue in Burlington’s Old North End. Prices for these framed prints range from $175 to $225.
